A limited cabinet meeting, chaired by the Head of State, studies the creation of a national body for legal information.



Jan. 31, 1994
A center for studies, research and documentation for young people is created.



Feb. 21, 1994
The Labor Code is amended to promote the system of settlement of individual labor disputes, to reinforce the workers' rights.



Feb. 28, 1994
A decree is published creating a higher committee for legal information and a national legal information system, to strengthen awareness and knowledge of legal matters and consolidate the rule of law.



March 20, 1994
Presidential and legislative elections are held. President Ben Ali is reelected and, for the first time in Tunisia, members of opposition parties enter the Chamber of Deputies.



April 9, 1994
The first multi-party parliament in Tunisia's history is inaugurated.



May 1, 1994
President Ben Ali receives the annual report of the Higher Committee on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.



May 3, 1994
Tunisia for the first time joins the international community in celebrating the World Day of Freedom of the Press.



May 23, 1994
A law is enacted organizing the profession of notary to strengthen the citizens' rights to certify their transactions.



May 29, 1994
The Union of Arab Lawyers chooses Tunisia as the site for the headquarters of the Arab Institute for Lawyers' Training.



June 28, 1994
Tunis hosts an inter-Arab meeting to evaluate the World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna in June 1993.



June 28, 1994
President Ben Ali receives the "Medal of Heads of State," awarded by the International Lion's Club Association in recognition of his support of humanitarian causes.



July 26, 1994
A law is enacted defining the State's contribution to the expenses of day nurseries, to confirm the mother's right to work and to protect the rights of the children of female workers and civil servants.



July 28, 1994
December 8th (the date in 1992 on which President Ben Ali announced the creation of the National Solidarity Fund, 26-26) is declared "National Solidarity Day."



Aug. 5, 1994
The departmental order of the Prime Minister appointing the members of the higher committee for legal information is published.

Sept. 8, 1994
The National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) is awarded the UNESCO prize for the eradication of illiteracy.



Oct. 10, 1994
A decree is published concerning the allowance for pleading to be granted trainee-lawyers appointed in criminal matters, to strengthen the rights of the defendant with respect to defense.



Oct. 24, 1994
Conciliation boards are set up at the sites of courts of first instance, to strengthen the workers' right to have recourse to legal action.

Oct. 31, 1994
A law is enacted for the protection of the elderly.



Nov. 7, 1994
Broadcasting begins on the television channel for youth, "Canal 21," created at the instigation of President Ben Ali on March 20, 1994.



Dec. 8, 1994
Celebration of National Solidarity Day, to strengthen the spirit of solidarity among all Tunisians.



Dec. 10, 1994
Celebration of World Human Rights Day, presided over by President Ben Ali, who awards the 1994 "Prize of the President of the Republic for Human Rights" to the Algerian human rights activist, Mrs Saïda Benhabylès.
