Human Rights in Tunisia: Options and Accomplishments

 
     

       
   

The fiftieth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On the occasion of the commemoration, by the international community, of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Tunisia has organized a national program placed under the high patronage of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
As a crowning to this program, the Head of State presided over a ceremony at the Palace of Carthage, during which he awarded the 1998 «Presidential Prize for Human Rights» to Professor Abdelfattah Amor.
The national program contained the following events and activities:

  • A competition in essay writing on human rights with the participation of more than 11,000 pupils. On December 9, 1998, Mrs Leïla Ben Ali, presided over the prize awarding ceremony.

  • A national exhibition on Tunisia's accomplishments in the field of human rights, inaugurated on December 9, 1998 by the Prime Minister.

  • A series of meetings and conferences, including:
    • a conference on "the Arab family and the challenges of the 21st century," held on May 14, 1998, by the Tunisian Organization for Education and the Family (OTEF) in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Education and the Family;
    • an international conference on the theme "parents faced with globalization," held by the Ministry of Women's and Family Affairs on May 15 and 16, 1998 in collaboration with the International Federation for Parental Education;
    • a round table on "civil society, human rights and emigration," held on August 5, 1998 by the Association for the Defense of Tunisians Living Abroad.
    • a UN experts' meeting on "women and health" held from September 28 to October12, 1998 by the Ministry of Women's and Family Affairs with the assistance of the UN division for the advancement of women, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA);
    • a meeting and discussion on "promoting awareness of human rights in school curricula," held on October 24, 1998 by the OTEF and the National Commission for Education in Human Rights;
    • a scientific seminar on "justice and human rights" held on November 12, 1998 by the Higher Institute of the Magistrature, the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, and the Human Rights Unit of the Ministry of Justice.
    • an international conference on "women in the service of world peace," held on November 13 and 14, 1998 at the initiative of the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) in collaboration with UNESCO;
    • a national conference on "the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 50 Years Later," held on November 20 and 21, 1998 by the Higher Committee on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
  • New stamp issue on the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Publication, by various national institutions and organizations, of folders and publications, including especially:
    • a series of publications and brochures on Tunisian accomplishments in human rights published by the Higher Committee on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the National Commission for Education in Human Rights.
    • a calendar published by the National Commission for Education in Human Rights;
    • special issues of magazines published by national institutions, such as the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, the Center for Studies, Research, Documentation and Information an Women (CREDIF), and the General Directorate of prison and rehabilitation establishments.
    • postcards on the rights of the child in Tunisia published by the Center for Studies, Research and Documentation on Youth and Childhood.
