Human Rights in Tunisia: Options and Accomplishments

 
     

       
   

Mechanisms to Protect Human Rights, disseminate Awareness and Understanding of these Rights

  • Instituting of the Presidential Prize for Human Rights, awarded to "individuals, organizations, institutions and agencies that have distinguished themselves through eminent services in the field of human rights, the strengthening and development of human rights, and dissemination of information regarding them, nationally, regionally and on the world level" (1993).

  • Creation of the Higher Committee on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, to strengthen the mechanisms for the protection of human rights in Tunisia (1991).

  • Establishment of human rights units in the ministries of Justice, the Interior and Foreign Affairs, to reinforce national mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights (1992).

  • Creation of a National Commission for Education in Human Rights, as a contribution to the implementation of the national strategy of dissemination of human rights value in educational establishments favor of strengthening human rights and disseminating information and education regarding them (1996).

  • Introduction of international human rights standards in training programs for law enforcement agents and judges. By departmental order of the Minister of Justice, this subject has been introduced into the curricula of the Higher Institute of the Magistracy (1993).

  • Creation of the Center for Juridical and Judicial Studies (1992) and of the National School of the Prison and Rehabilitation Services (1996) as an element in this effort to provide training in human rights and disseminate awareness of the human rights ethic.

  • UNESCO Director General announces plans to create a "UNESCO Chair of Philosophy" in Tunis, at the University of Letters and Humanities (Tunis I), to be followed by a chair for copyright law and two others for "knowledge of the heritage and cultural development" and for "tolerance and human rights" (January 11, 1997).

  • Publication by the Higher Committee on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the National Commission for Education in Human Rights of a series of books and reference documents dealing with several aspects of human rights in Tunisia.

  • Since November 7, 1987, thanks to the favorable climate Tunisia offers, the country has hosted a large number of international and regional events devoted to disseminating the values of human rights.

    • The first International Forum on "education for democracy," held by UNESCO (1992).
    • A regional meeting for Africa of the “World Conference on Human Rights”, held by the United Nations (1992).
    • An Arab conference on "education in the field of human rights" (1993)
