5 - Other social and economic indicators

The following indicators join those already mentioned to illustrate the magnitude of the effort made, since the Change of November 7, 1987, to improve living conditions, as an element in confirming the population's right to development.

  • Rate of social welfare benefit coverage: 52% in 1986; 81.26% in 1998.
  • Social welfare expenditure per capita: 177 dinars in 1986; 468.8 dinars in 1998.
  • Drinking water supply: 100% in urban areas; 75.5% in rural areas (1998).
  • Rate of electrification: 69% in 1986; 93.2% in 1998.
  • Four out of five households now own their own housing.
  • The rate of rudimentary shelter has been brought down from 8.8% in 1984 to 2.7% in 1996.
  • The number of households with the telephone has more than doubled, and those who own an automobile have tripled.
