International Distinctions

Numerous international organizations, both governmental and non-governmental (WHO, ILO, FAO, etc.), joined by all kinds of experts and observers (the Summits of Rio, Vienna, Cairo, Copenhagen, Beijing, and others), recognize the importance of Tunisia's accomplishments in promoting human rights in their global dimention.

The distinctions that have been awarded to President Ben Ali illustrate this recognition:

  • The Louise Michel Prize for Democracy and Human rights (1988).

  • The medal of honor of the International Institute for Humanitarian Law (1989).

  • The award of the association "Two Hands for Childhood" (1995).

  • The "Health for All" medal of the World Health Organization (1996).

  • The gold medal of the Mediterranean Conference of Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies (1997).

  • The Emblem of Arab Lawyers (1997).

  • The first medal commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of UNESCO (1997).

  • An honorary doctoral degree from the University of Ancona (1997).

  • The Golden Shield of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, ALECSO (1998).
