Tunisia's Relations with International Human Rights Organizations
Tunisia maintains close cooperation with the United
Nations agencies involved in human rights, and twice since the Change has been elected member of the UN Human Rights
Commission.
Tunisia has ratified nearly all international convenants
and treaties in this regard, which, once ratified, are considered under the constitution as having pre-eminence
over domestic laws.
Since 1988, Tunisia has completed its endorsement of
international standards in this field, particularly through the following actions:
Ratification, in November 1988, of the United Nations
Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Punishment or Treatment, with no reservations
and with the declarations stipulated in articles 21 and 22 of the convention.
Recognition, in April 1993, of the competence of the
human rights commission, established by article 41 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the
Child, in November 1991.
Ratification of Convention no.138 concerning the minimum
age for employment, which prohibits the economic exploitation of children.
Tunisia is home to sections of a number of international
NGOs, including El Taller, Amnesty International, the World Mothers’ Movement, etc. Tunisia is also host to the
Arab Human Rights Institute
